The bid is the price at which you can sell an asset and the ask is the price at which you can buy it. The ask is always slightly higher than the bid, and the difference between them is the spread.
Why it matters: when you open a trade you pay the spread immediately, because you buy at the ask and would sell at the bid. Knowing these two prices helps you understand your real costs.
