Volatility measures the intensity and speed with which the price of an asset moves. A very volatile market has wide and fast movements; a low volatility one moves slowly and narrowly.
Why it matters: volatility defines both opportunity and risk. Different strategies work better in volatile or calm environments, and adjusting position size to volatility is key.
